Tort Law and How It’s Tied to Culture
by M. Stuart Madden, Esq.
URLink Print and Media
book review by Peter M. Fitzpatrick
"“…tort-type law, we can see that principles of economic efficiency have always been a part and parcel of civil remediations of wrongful harm."
In his highly informative work, the author posits that as soon as small social groups began to coalesce, man devised methodologies to maintain order by enforcing customs, norms, and peace through rules preventing such wrongs as theft, assault, battery, and negligence, to name a few. Written codes like that of Hammurabi and King Ur Nammu were the first known written laws, but it was the Greek penchant for myths such as those written down by Hesiod that led later Greek philosophers like Socrates and Plato to devise detailed reasons for laws as the highest "good." The Roman law of twelve tables was revised by Solon and later expanded into the Codes, Institutes, and Digests (Pandects) of Justinian I that became practical customary law.
TORT LAW AND HOW IT'S TIED TO OUR CULTURE
December 2, 2019
“A comprehensive historical tour of tort law considers its development within a cultural and philosophical context. According to Madden, “Tort law has always represented a society’s revealed truth as to its better self, and further to so doing, has identified the behaviors it wishes to encourage and the behaviors it wishes to discourage.” As a consequence, a full appreciation of tort law’s historical unfolding requires a broad interpretive horizon that includes an analysis of socio-economic conditions, religious and philosophical commitments, and shifting cultural realities.
“The author’s approach is impressively expansive—he covers the birth of tort in ancient law, including the Torah, the Quran, and Tibetan folk law, through the partnership of common and statutory law in the present. Madden contends that tort law aims for a balance among justice, morality, and efficiency, and so its establishment not only expresses the heart of a culture, but also functions as a lucid gauge of progress. He also argues that the arc of tort law’s development has been one leaning toward scientific progress.
“The author examines a breathtaking swath of intellectual territory, including a keen consideration of the roles of myth and folklore, and offers delightfully unconventional views. For example, Madden deftly explores the extent to which the Goths appropriated Roman law. . . .. . . [A]n illuminating and insightful work about tort law.”

“Excellent harmony of the Gospels“
This well done harmony of the four Gospels places the events of the last 11 days of Jesus’ earthly ministry in chronological order. There are a couple of minor theological differences I have with the work (e.g. Jesus did not descend into Hell) or I’d give it 5 stars. This work can be used for personal or group study, sermon prep, or as a devotional for personal or church use.

“Take time to read page 1 and 2 prior to beginning this study book.“
A book on the last eleven days of the life of Jesus Christ set in chronological order. On page 2 Pastor Levandusky explains how to get the most benefits from this study book.
The book has 5 columns on each of the 11 days. The columns are Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and a column of comments from the author Pastor Levandusky. Under each of the columns of the gospels are bible verses about the day.
It is a very organized, clear format for following Jesus in his last eleven days and his post resurrection appearances.
I am looking forward to studying this book in a Facebook group led by Pastor David Levandusky.

“A Daily Detailed Record of Jesus Last Eleven Days.“
This book is a must read of Jesus last eleven days and will be referred to over and over again throughout the year and especially during the Easter season of the year. It is like reading the daily Jerusalem news following Jesus everyday in what he said, where He went, the people he met and conversed with and leading up to His Crucifixion and Resurrection. One of the best in following a chronological order of Jesus last 11 days. Great for the devotional reader and the serious Bible student. I wouldn’t be without it.

“Making the complicated simple“
Often when reading the Gospels the question surfaces, what, if anything, do the other Gospels say about this incident? Searching this out can seem daunting. Pastor Levandusky has simplified this for us by paralleling the four Gospels relative to the dramatic final days of Christ’s ministry. For the serious student of the Bible this presents the scenes and narratives in a manner that makes it easy to compare.

Rev. Levandusky is so prestigious in his efforts to be absolute; he leaves nothing for the guessing mind. I love writers who are this careful in their presentation – Dr. Russell K. Pier, founder and president of a Bible college; 1959-2000.
